Cervical Health Awareness Month: Preventing Cervical Cancer

According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, more than 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States each year. Yet cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers today.

What Causes Cervical Cancer?
Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) — the most common STI in the United States. Affecting approximately 79 million Americans, HPV can be detected in 93% of all cervical cancers.

Other contributing factors may be:

  • Smoking
  • Poor nutrition
  • A weakened immune system
  • Pregnancy

Ways to Prevent Cervical Cancer
There are several ways to prevent cervical cancer:

  • Getting routine screenings to identify and treat any precancers
  • Getting HPV vaccination
  • Practicing safe sex
  • Limiting the number of sex partners
  • Quitting smoking
